Word Choice: fast or rapid

Rapid относится к официальному стилю, используется на деловой встрече, в выпусках новостей, научных статьях. 

Fast считается более неформальным словом. 

Fast чаще всего используется со словами food, track, lane, pace; 
rapid - с существительными growth, change.

Кроме того, слово fast может выступать в качестве прилагательного в значении "быстрый", наречия - "быстро", глагола - "поститься". 

Слово rapid является прилагательным и не используется как наречие или глагол.

В чем разница между artist и painter?

Artist более широкое понятие, чем painter. Этим словом можно назвать не только непосредственно художников, но и людей других профессий, имеющих отношение к искусству. Например, скульпторов или музыкантов.

Кроме этого, artist - это артист (особенно тот, кто профессионально занимается музыкой, танцами или театром).

И еще одно значение этого слова - "мастер своего дела" (informal).

Painter -  художник, живописец. Также это слово переводится "маляр", т.к. глагол "paint" имеет значение "красить, окрашивать".
